Video Cable
Can you use an S Video cable to download video from your camcorder?
My laptop does not have a Firewire Port (and I am not sure if this has the slot for the Firewire Card or not). I need to connect a Digital video camera that uses Firewire cable.
My computer has an S-VIDEO jack though. So, can I download video from my camcorder that way?
Some higher end MiniDv cameras like the GL-1 have analog video out using s-video or RCA type cable.
To use these, you need a capture device like a Dazzle (several versions).
The S-Video on your laptop is likely “Out” only (as far as I have ever seen, this is not a two way connection, if you have just one, it is “out”)
The preferred method is to correctly use the firewire port. If an expansion card is not possible with your laptop, you will need a different computer to get the benefit of your high quality MiniDv format.
Some cameras have both a USB and a firewire port. The USB is for downloading low res video and still shots recorded to a memory card only, and will not download MiniDv video.
